Business communications consultancy Vesuvius UK is helping local companies prepare for the forthcoming changes in regulations on 0870 telephone numbers.

New legislation, which outlaws the revenue share associated with 0870 numbers, will come into force in January 2008 Currently, when someone dials an 0870 number, the company shares the money generated by the call with the phone operator

And because the calls are charged at national rates, this can become a significant source of revenue for businesses.

At the same time, the new legislation will replace the revenue share with a charge similar to those on 0800 numbers.

Vesuvius is to host a seminar at the North Staffs Chamber of Commerce, Festival Park, to inform businesses of the changes, to help reduce their impact.

And it will also suggest other alternatives, like 0871 and 0844, which will still offer a revenue share, or the more established options such as 0800 and 0845.

Managing Director Jon Allen said: "0870 telephone numbers get a bad press because there is the suggestion customers are deliberately put on hold to generate additional revenue for companies.

"This has led OFCOM to suggest new legislation to remove the revenue share, which will take away the only real benefit to having an 0870.

"Some companies will lose a lot of money when the changes come into force, but there are alternatives which can soften the blow.

"It's also very easy to switch from 0870 to another number".

The seminar, entitled "Soften the Blow of Losing your 0870", takes place between 10am and 2pm on 16 October.
