VisitBritain has appointed the UK's largest search engine marketing company, The Search Works, as its SEO partner after a four-way pitch including Bigmouthmedia and Spannerworks.

VisitBritain was created in March 2003 after the merger of the English Tourism council and the British Tourist Authority to market Britain to the rest of the world Funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, VisitBritain operates 25 offices in 42 overseas markets - the London office oversees global online activity including search engine optimisation, pay per click and web development

The current site has been very successful, winning the World Travel Awards 'Leading Tourist Information Site' for three consecutive years.

The agencies were given an open brief to display their ideas, advising on short, mid and long term strategies.

The decision was made based on numerous factors, not least the ability to manage large-scale international projects.

Vickie Birnage, International Online Marketing Manager for VisitBritain said: "Organic search is a critical source of traffic for the VisitBritain.com sites, so the agency selection was very vital; The Search Works met our criteria needs and provided not only the fundamental approach to the bread and butter of SEO but also forward thinking activities that will be hugely beneficial to us".

After winning Easyjet, this marks another significant win for the London agency in the area of search engine optimisation for the travel market.

James Keehan, Commercial Product Director for The Search Works, commented: "We are delighted with the decision and look forward to working closely with VisitBritain helping them achieve their search objectives.

"The creative approach to this project is underpinned by our established technical ability".
