The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) is to hold a social marketing event at Bournemouth University in Dorset, Poole, on 12 October 2009.

The 'Social Marketing: Shape the Agenda' paper will be presented in Exeter, Bristol and Poole by Mark Stuart, head of research at the CIM.

Prof Patrick W Jordan, author and marketing and brand strategist, will be a guest speaker.

The evening events will focus on how governments and other organisations have used social marketing to create successful campaigns in areas such as health, the environment and road safety and to demonstrate to the commercial sector how social marketing techniques can be used as the basis for effective promotional campaigns.

Stuart said: 'Social marketing is about changing consumer perceptions and creating positive behavioural change - not to be confused with social network marketing such as using Facebook or Twitter.

'It's the subject of one of this year's two 'Shape the Agenda' discussion papers and the events in the southwest region are part of a countrywide tour.

'We hope it will demonstrate to Dorset business owners, managers and commercial marketers how they may be able to use an awareness and understanding of social marketing in their own marketing strategies.
