Marketing qualifications boost earnings
Professional qualifications make candidates stand out in the employee selection process and enable them to earn higher salaries, according to research from the CIM.
With the results from The Chartered Institute of Marketing's Croner Rewards survey showing that qualified top marketers do earn more than their unqualified peers, it's no surprise that recent figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) reveal that the number of postgraduate students in marketing has more than doubled in the first six years of the new millennium This means that not only is the number of candidates for well paid marketing positions increasing but that the bar has been raised significantly in terms of the educational level of those entering the profession

CIM unveils learning and development directory
The Chartered Institute of Marketing's Learning and Development Directory of Courses for 2007-2008 is now available for marketing, sales and HR departments.
Commenting on the findings, Keith Fletcher, director of education at The Chartered Institute of Marketing, said: "It's becoming increasingly difficult for employers to distinguish between marketing candidates, but, by looking for applicants with up-to-date and relevant qualifications, they are able to differentiate between the good marketing candidate and the professionally outstanding marketer".
The Croner results show that a career in marketing is where money can be made and that qualifications add significantly to top marketing salaries.
The result is that with such large numbers of candidates for every vacancy it has become a fundamental part of an employers' early sifting selection process to use qualifications to benchmark candidates.
"Making a career change is difficult enough but having a widely recognised, professional qualification helps serious marketers stand out from the pack," added Fletcher.
"To help make it easier, most of our study centres offer flexible study methods, including intensive residential learning, part-time study, evening classes, e-learning and distance learning.
"Some also offer a blended learning approach that allows students to fit their studies in with work and other commitments".
The Croner Reward survey, completed for The Institute, shows that qualifications have a significant effect on salary at both marketing director and marketing officer levels.
Marketing directors with a professional qualification can expect to earn GBP10,000 more, respectively than those who are part-qualified.
For marketing officers, the difference is less marked; the best-paid are those with an HNC/HND/BTEC higher qualification, who are likely to earn GBP3,729 more than those who are only part-qualified.
