Britons urged to vote potato as "King of
Veg"
You can eat it, you can clean with it, you can even make electricity with it - that's why the Real Potato Co has launched an online election campaign to crown the potato King of Veg.
History's most significant vegetable and one of the world's most important food crops is set after centuries, to get the recognition it deserves as the 'ultimate' vegetable This is just in time for the International Year of the Potato in 2008, which will increase awareness of the potato's importance as a food in developing nations
Since its arrival in Britain, the potato has been a staple of the British diet, with people eating their way through a massive 1.6 million tonnes of fresh potatoes last year alone.
But few people know that the potato's uses stretch far beyond the plate.
Now these may seem like an old wives' tale, but the potato can be a bit of a domestic dream.
Have you ever heard of a vegetable that can add shine to your silverware or remove rust from pots? In fact if you fancied the idea of an eco-friendly natural treatment, the potato is even said to be great for the skin.
Now members of the public can show their love for the potato and support the 'King of Veg' campaign by visiting realpotato.co.uk and registering their vote.
Potato lovers will also be given the chance to share tips and recipes and discover some additional quirky uses.
As a passionate potato brand who eat, sleep and breathe potatoes, the Real Potato Co have gained the support of the British Potato Council, who agree that other vegetables pale in significance to the versatility of the potato.
Jo Parish, sales and marketing director, The Real Potato Co, said: "As potato experts, potatoes are our number one love.
"We believe they are one of the most versatile and delicious vegetables that have amazing nutritional value.
"It was a real surprise to us to discover some of the weird and wonderful things potatoes are said to be useful for.
"That's why we decided to launch the campaign in recognition of the potato's greatness and to give the public a chance to have their say on just how worthy the potato's contribution to society actually is".
Kathryn Race, marketing director, British Potato Council, said: "This campaign highlights just how amazingly healthy and versatile the potato really is; potatoes are low in fat, contain no cholesterol and are packed full of vitamins and minerals.
"With so many different varieties in the shops there is a potato to suit every taste and cooking requirement.
"We already know that potatoes are loved by the British people and we urge everyone to show their support to get potatoes crowned the 'King of Veg'".
