Sappi Fine Paper Europe has published The Environment and Sappi in Europe, a series of factsheets describing how the company manages its environmental activities.

The publication, initially in English but available in other European languages shortly, is aimed at Sappi customers, suppliers, product specifiers and printers, as well as other interested parties As a major player in the European pulp and paper sector, Sappi has led the way in its concern for the environment

It was the first paper company in Europe to achieve joint ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and EMAS certification for its activities and recently also became the first to gain multi-site cross-border group chain-of-custody certification for its entire European operations under both the FSC and PEFC forestry management schemes.

"We have consistently been among the leaders in our industry in ensuring that our processes are safe, efficient and environmentally sound and that the materials we use come from well-managed, sustainable resources," stated Berry Wiersum, Sappi Fine Paper Europe CEO.

"We have also made substantial progress in introducing innovative energy solutions to meet the challenges of climate change and expand our use of renewable energy, as well as in reducing our environmental impact in terms of air emissions, water consumption and waste.

The publication is presented in the factsheet format to allow Sappi to easily update the content whenever the company takes new environmental initiatives.

The individual sheets cover Sappi's policy on sustainable development, its European environmental management system, safety and health, products, source materials, energy, its production processes and its main European environmental data over the past seven years.

As a signatory to the International Council of Forest and Paper Associations (ICFPA) CEO Leadership Statement, Sappi Fine Paper Europe has committed itself to high standards of sustainability and environmental management and to the development of manufacturing practices that meet stringent environmental, social and economic objectives.
