Survey uncovers freelance marketers' salaries
A survey by SG Group shows freelances choose the role for the flexibility it offers and most of them work as hard as their employed counterparts - but for fewer benefits.
One of the advantages when it comes to freelancing is that YOU call the shots on your time.
That may be true to an extent - indeed the recent SG Group Freelance Salary Survey, in collaboration with mad.co.uk, showed 51 per cent of respondents chose freelancing for the "degree of flexibility" it provides.
However, it seems that 60 per cent of you freelancers still work as much as your permanent counterparts and almost a fifth of you work more than 41 hours.
So then, you're working as hard, but are you receiving the same benefits as your permanent friends? Apparently not.
Some 83 per cent of freelancers who completed the survey receive no benefits and a significant number aren't aware they have legal rights with regard to both sick pay and holidays.
So let's set the record straight.
You can already receive statutory sick pay and from 1st October, your rights as a freelancer are getting better.
You will be entitled to 24 days' holiday a year and this is due to rise again the following April (we'll keep you informed).
So while you're working hard out there, make sure you also take some time out for yourself - it's legally yours and you deserve it.
