Leading international design company Research Studios has worked on the design of the new nationwide daily, Polska, published by Polskapresse Publishing Group.

The year-long project is the latest in a list of print media launches and revamps including The Times and Guardian Unlimited The company's magazine and newspaper design experience originates with founder Neville Brody's milestone work on the iconic style magazine The Face and also from his role as art director on Actuel, City Limits, Per Lui and Arena magazines, all of which broke the publishing mould

Under the "Polska" title six regional dailies of Polskapresse and newly launched newspapers were merged to create the nationwide daily.

The project is the biggest publishing event in the Polish newspaper publishing sector in recent years.

"Polska" represents a hybrid which fuses the nationwide daily format with a strong regional identity and local news but at the same time with full, best quality national and world news.

The newspaper is published in full colour and is the first and only Polish newspaper offering colour themed supplements every day.

In the main newspaper readers are also offered special colour supplements and Tele Magazyn, a modern TV programme guide.

"Polska" has been created in cooperation with The Times whose logo appears in vignette on the front cover, the newspaper also features selected editorial content from The Times.

Pawel Fafara, editor-in-chief of "Polska", commented: "The launch of "Polska" is the result of months of preparation and is one of the most advanced publishing projects in Europe.

"We have created a newspaper which doesn't observe Poland only from Warsaw's perspective and which doesn't limit itself only to the interest in politics.

"We cover stories from the whole country.

"We also have a tough approach to politicians who we evaluate not on the basis of what they say but on the basis of what they really do for Poland".

Matt Brown, design director of Polska, commented: "The biggest values of Polska are its modernity, the regional and local coverage, sitting alongside first-class national and international news gathering , and its sheer easiness to read.

"Readers see Polska layout as a new model of a nationwide newspaper with a very modern feel.

"The key to success of the newspaper will not be as a nationwide daily but in its basic philosophy of being a totally local newspaper that has the look and feel of a national title".

Nick Hard of Research Studios commented: "This is an excellent time for Polish newspaper publishing to take such a dramatic step.

"There is now a huge repatriation of Polish workers from the UK, people who have sampled first hand British newspaper and magazine publishing and will be looking for something similar in their home country.

"The layout of "Polska" is both modern and clear and reflects the best traditions of Polish and world journalism.

"Its compact format makes it both easy to navigate and visually compelling.

"Having worked on leading British compacts such as The Guardian and The Times we had a lot of experience in-house about what readers are looking for in a truly contemporary daily newspaper.

"That learning has enabled us, along with the Polska team, to create something truly revolutionary for Poland".

Polska will be available at the price of 1,50 zloty and will appear from Monday to Saturday.
