Premier Paper goes carbon neutral
Premier Paper Group is the first paper merchant in the UK to gain CarbonNeutral accreditation.
The Premier Paper Group is pleased to announce that it has become a CarbonNeutral company and is the first UK merchant to achieve this accreditation.
Together with The CarbonNeutral Company and The Carbon Trust, via their appointed agency EMTEC, Premier has completed a full analysis of its carbon emissions and has instigated a substantial programme of internal energy savings.
These savings are scheduled to yield reductions of 11% of energy costs in 2007.
A further 7% savings have already been identified.
"Through our shared ownership of distribution company gm2, we have already contributed to a staggering reduction of 1,165 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to 136,000 gallons of diesel, reducing miles travelled by 1,238,400 on our congested UK roads during 2007," said Paddy Byrne, Corporate and Social Responsibility Manager for Premier.
"We also have our first electric truck on order.
"As well as internally reducing our own carbon emissions, we are also working with suppliers to develop carbon-neutral grades; this is an ongoing process but demonstrates Premier's commitment to the environment and our determination to keep environmental issues at the forefront of our business strategy".
As part of Premier's commitment, the company will be working with The CarbonNeutral Company to support a number of independently assessed carbon-offset programmes that all meet strictly assessed criteria.
Jonathan Shopley, Executive Director of The CarbonNeutral Company, said: "It is great to see a leading paper merchant taking this issue seriously and working hard to achieve CarbonNeutral status; we hope Premier Paper's stance will encourage other businesses to follow suit and reduce their carbon emissions".
