Nomensa creates accessible media player

A Nomensa product story

Nomensa has created an accessible media player that is able to play both audio and video content.

The company said the accessible media player will be of use for websites that have to comply with government accessibility guidelines yet want to benefit from the ability to put audio and video content on websites.

A typical Flash shell has been wrapped in HTML and CSS to give the media player a fully accessible interface.

It also has the capacity for transcripts and captioning to be included as part of the media stream, which enables people with hearing difficulties to enjoy the content.

Nomensa's media player is fully accessible, which ensures that keyboard-only users are able to operate it.

In addition to this, conventions of a typical Flash player have remained so that users who are familiar with standard media-player controls are able to use the player.

In response to the popularity of social media, Nomensa has also adapted the accessible media player to ensure it can be embedded into a site to play Youtube videos.

This means that a number of videos can be sourced from Youtube and played on the fully accessible player, without the user leaving your site.

As the player is wrapped in CSS, it can be altered and personalised to ensure that it is fully branded to fit the website it sits on.

Bespoke media players can also be produced.
