Events agency MotivAction has become 'one to watch' in the Best Companies Accreditation Scheme.

In its second year of applying, the Hertfordshire-based company has succeeded in gaining elite national accreditation through the scheme, which awards 'Michelin style' star ratings and accreditation scores for outstanding workplaces and investment in people The Best Companies scheme uses a confidential survey designed to measure employee and workplace engagement across eight factors

Based on a 1-1,000 Best Companies Index (BCI) scale, scores are defined by employee responses to 16 key questions.

Of the 653 companies applying for accreditation in 2008, only 48 achieved the highest 3-star award.

MotivAction improved on its 2007 BCI score of 601, achieving 619 points and ranking 40 points away from a 1-star rating.

This has led to the company's 'one to watch' status.

MotivAction's managing director, Tim Waygood, is optimistic about the possibility of attaining a star rating: "We've jumped up by 18 points this year, and now we're only 40 points away from a star rating.

"With more progress this year, we'll be hoping for a star in 2009.

"This displays the great workplace set-up we have cultivated here, and it's good to see that the changes we have put in place, like our environmental policies, have been well received by colleagues".

A defining factor in MotivAction's accreditation was a large shift in employee opinion in the survey's 'giving something back' category.

Here, MotivAction saw a 16 per cent increase in positive employee opinion from 2007.

This category is designed to explore how much people think their organisation puts back into society.

The company also saw a 5 per cent increase in opinion over well-being issues.

The large increase in positive opinion about 'giving something back' is likely to be the result of MotivAction's large-scale adoption of environmental policies in 2007, culminating in the company filing a copy of their CSR policy with Companies House.

Waygood said: "Our CSR policy is now out there in the public domain.

"We believe we are the first events company to file a CSR or environmental policy with Companies House, and this serves to highlight, once again, our commitment to operate as a sustainable business".

During the 2008 Best Companies survey, the responses of 140,000 employees were analysed to produce the list of accredited companies.

The Best Companies list is published both in print and online, and acts as a useful guide for jobseekers and graduates.

Jonathan Austin, chief executive of Best Companies, said: "I congratulate these companies on their outstanding achievement.

"Our role at Best Companies is to set a rigorous benchmark so that organisations can become even better employers.

"This year it is encouraging to see that the number of companies entering the accreditation scheme for excellence in workplace engagement has grown by one third".
