As Valentine's Day approaches, Maritz, the performance improvement company, reveals that the majority of workers in the UK enjoy close relationships at work.

In a national workplace survey, 62 per cent of UK workers say they have a positive relationship with their team and line manager Younger workers have the best working relationships with almost three-quarters (73 per cent) of those aged 18-24 years old saying they strongly agreed or tended to agree that they have positive relationships

However just 40 per cent of those aged 55-64 and 55 per cent of 35-44 year olds felt the same.

Nick Bender, Managing Director of Maritz, said: "It is great that so many younger workers have such positive relationships with their managers and colleagues.

"Line managers and business leaders can help foster a positive working environment by recognising achievements and saying thank you for a job well done, whatever age their employees are".

Recognition - or saying thank you, often with an associated reward - can have a solid impact on an organisation's bottom line by increasing levels of morale, retention and the individual's likelihood to go the extra mile.

While flowers and chocolates are popular gifts at this time of year, Maritz suggests that companies looking to engage employees should consider offering out of the ordinary reward experiences or gifts such as a cookery course, a trip to a theme park, a spy-skills day or the chance to 'meet the meercats' which will really stick in their minds.

The ICM omnibus was used by Winmark to interview a random sample of 1,051 adults aged 18+ from ICM's online panel between 31 August and 2 September 2007.

Of this sample 626 respondents were employed full time or part time and the above statistics represent the responses of this group.
