BT and Limelight have won a double award at this year's ESA European Sponsorship Awards.

BT Community Connections, project managed by Limelight, won the Business to Community category and the Overall 2007 ESA Sponsorship Award BT Community Connections is an award programme developed to combat issues of social exclusion

The award-winning scheme brings digital technology to socially excluded communities and is one of BT's key CSR projects.

Since 2000 it has provided internet-ready computers and broadband access to more than 5,000 community and voluntary groups throughout the UK.

The European Sponsorship Awards were presented to representatives from BT and Limelight Community - a sister company of Limelight Sports, the UK's leading sports marketing and project management company.

Limelight Community manages BT Community Connections as well as handling the PR campaign and has worked with BT since the launch of the awards scheme in 2000.

It was up against strong competition from category winners including Norwich Union, the Ryder Cup and Allianz BMW.

Beth Courtier, Head of BT's Charity Programme, said: "BT Community Connections replaced our sponsorship of the BT Swimathon - we wanted to develop a programme which had real synergy with our business and which would make a very real difference to the communities in which we operate.

"The strength of the scheme is that it was developed in consultation with our key stakeholders and we continue to evaluate it year on year, to ensure it meets the needs of the community".

Sarah Smith, managing director of Limelight Community, said: "These awards recognise not only our achievements in successfully delivering a major community-led project, but also the genuine value of the BT Community Connections scheme as a unique and worthwhile initiative.

"Most of us take internet access and email for granted.

"Working on this programme has enabled us to witness first hand how these awards revolutionise and enrich many people's lives.

"We are very proud of BTCC and its results and are delighted that it has received such recognition, particularly on a European stage.

"To win one award would have been fantastic, but to win two is a great accolade for BT and Limelight".

Judges from seven European countries voted BT Community Connections as the overall winner, describing it as innovative and significant.

Karen Earl, ESA Chairman, said: "Our independent panel of judges was impressed with the high standard of entries.

"Their decision to nominate this as the top campaign was due to the considerable impact the sponsorship programme achieved; it was judged the most innovative of all, giving the greatest benefits not only to the sponsor, but to the community at large.".
