The Institute of Direct Marketing has announced that its 2008 Annual Lecture, sponsored by Oracle, will be delivered by Lord David Puttnam CBE.

The Oscar-winning, former independent film producer will deliver his address to an audience of senior members of the direct, data and digital marketing profession on 14 May in central London.

IDM Membership Director Caroline Robertson said: "Opportunities to learn first hand from a charismatic speaker of this calibre, who commands such far-reaching respect and influence, are rare indeed.

"Lord Puttnam's recent return to the marketing industry and his perennial enthusiasm for education and training make him the perfect choice to deliver a truly memorable IDM Annual Lecture".

After retiring from film-making in 1998, Lord Puttnam channeled his considerable energies into education, a field for which he has an enduring passion.

He became Chancellor of the University of Sunderland, then later of the Open University; he was the first Chair of the General Teaching Council and was instrumental in founding, and indeed is still Chair of Trustees, of the National Teaching Awards.

Now a very active President of children's charity, UNICEF UK, he has retained his influence in the TV and film industry through his Fellowship of BAFTA and Deputy Chairmanship of Channel 4.

Last year Lord Puttnam also made a return to his advertising roots when he became Chairman of digital agency Profero.

In delivering the highly respected IDM Annual Lecture, Lord Puttnam joins a line-up of impressive, influential and charismatic speakers that includes Kevin Roberts, CEO Worldwide, Saatchi and Saatchi; Clive Humby F IDM, Chairman, dunnhumby; and Britain's foremost neuroscientist and Director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain, Baroness Susan Greenfield CBE.

The 2008 IDM Annual Lecture takes place in central London on 14 May.
