IET opens London hq as event venue
Savoy Place, home of the IET in London and contender for best view in the capital, will this year open its doors for the first time on New Year's Eve.
Savoy Place, built in 1887 as the headquarters of the Royal College of Medicine, is now home to the Institution of Engineering and Technology, formerly the IEE The IET is one of the world's leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community

Venue Sales Manager Sarah Gibbins said: "After last year's fantastic firework display over the London Eye, we have been approached by a number of companies wishing to host a private dinner in our prestigious Riverside Room as it offers uninterrupted views across the river with a bird's eye view of the celebrations.
"We are able to offer this for a minimum of 150 guests to a maximum of 180.
"Discerning diners will enjoy not only the best view of London but will be treated to a sumptuous three-course fine dining menu and Champagne to see in 2008 courtesy of the venue's on-site caterers, In-House Catering.
Entertainment on the night will be provided by a live band (although other types of entertainment can be arranged).
The Chinese invented fireworks and used them especially on New Year's Eve to dispel evil spirits.
They didn't want those nasty spirits following them into the New Year so however you welcome the New Year in - "Xin Nian Kuai Le" if you are Chinese, "S Novim Godom" if you are Russian, "Bonne Annee" if you French or with a chorus of "Old Lang Syne" - the team at Savoy Place look forward to celebrating it with you.
