CertifiedEmail launches in UK

A Goodmail Systems product story
Edited by the Marketingweek Marketplace editorial team May 21, 2007

Goodmail Systems is launching its CertifiedEmail service in the UK and has completed reseller agreements for the trusted-class email service with 15 leading email service providers (ESPs).

CertifiedEmail is Goodmail's system for enabling a premium class of trusted email that assures consumer recipients of a message's authenticity and a sender's legitimacy, while providing qualifying commercial and non-profit senders with trusted-class privileges.

These include assured delivery of messages to consumers who expect to receive them, and automatic rendering of links and images on default.

ISPs and mailbox providers today increasingly disable links and images on default as a security measure, impacting email programme effectiveness since consumers do not see the email's contents.

CertifiedEmail messages, however, since they are trusted email messages from accredited, legitimate senders, are automatically rendered intact.

"Everyone has seen, even in the last several months, the unfortunate rise in the volume of spam and other forms of illegitimate email," said Goodmail CEO and co-founder Richard Gingras.

"The effectiveness of the medium for legitimate senders - and the safety of it for consumers - is being steadily eroded.

"By specially marking known good messages as safe, CertifiedEmail restores trust to customer email communications.

"We're very pleased to begin our international expansion with the UK market".

Commercial and non-profit senders with the best email practices who meet Goodmail's stringent accreditation standards will be able to send CertifiedEmails into UK consumer email domains at supporting mailbox providers AOL and Yahoo! The ESPs that have signed up in the UK to offer CertifiedEmail mailing capability include Acxiom Digital, CheetahMail, Communicator Corp, dotMailer, e-Dialog, Emailreaction, Emailvision, Emailbureau, Lyris, MailAgent, Neolane, Responsys, Spinnakerpro.com Silverpop and TMNMedia.

CertifiedEmail is accepted at leading ISPs and mailbox providers who specially process incoming CertifiedEmail, checking for the presence of cryptographically secure tokens indicating an email is authentic and from a legitimate, trusted sender.

CertifiedEmail is presented to email users with a unique blue-ribbon envelope icon indicating trusted status, in an effort to provide an additional layer of protection to customers from email scams such as phishing.

AOL, and Yahoo! accept CertifiedEmail in the UK.

"In the US today, there are now over 300 sending brands signed on with CertifiedEmail," said Jos Burger, general manager of European operations for Goodmail.

"Many of these brands, such as About, Time, Motley Fool, RealAge, KwikMed, iVillage, Golf Channel, Sharper Image, GNC Corporation, Olympus, Marriott, and Maidenform Online, also send to UK consumer mailbox domains, where they encounter the same deliverability and image rendering issues as they do in the US.

"We're excited to have the support of so many leading ESPs, who can get qualified senders imprinting CertifiedEmail for all their customer communications".

ESPs are companies that provide email sending services for corporations, non-profits, and government entities seeking optimal deliverability and email programme management.

ESPs maintain the necessary infrastructure to manage sending out email-based newsletters, transaction messages, product updates, and many other forms of legitimate, opt-in customer communications email.

"Delivery assurance and reputation is critical," said Chris Wilds, Managing Director of Communicator Corp.

"An evolving marketplace such as ours requires innovative and dependable services such as CertifiedEmail.

"This will provide our clients with further confidence when delivering relevant, personalised and now 'certified and trusted' communications.

"It will protect Communicator Corp clients' brand integrity, provide an increased level of trust via the authentication and differentiate their communications from regular email messages".

"By bolstering deliverability, the launch of CertifiedEmail, with the backing of the UK's leading internet service providers, will ensure that legitimate senders can differentiate themselves in the inbox and that email marketing campaigns are not consigned to spam folders," said Tink Taylor, Account Director of dotMailer.

"By working with senders that can demonstrate compliance with best email practices, CertifiedEmail will help raise industry standards and enable companies to track the potential increases in ROI on emails that include this trusted icon".

"With our client footprint in Europe growing, continuing to assure consumers of the authenticity of our clients' e-mails and maximising their deliverability is key," said Simone Barratt, Managing Director at e-Dialog.

"We're pleased to present CertifiedEmail to our clients as yet another option in our reputation and delivery assurance toolbox as we continue in our mission to stay ahead of their needs and market demands".

"Sender reputation in email marketing is paramount," said Tony Macpherson, Head of Client Services at EmailBureau.

"Goodmail's CertifiedEmail confirms to our clients' customers that the emails they receive are genuine.

"This is particularly important for our banking and financial services clients, and for those sending order confirmation emails.

"Assured delivery of messages to consumers who expect to receive them and the automatic rendering of links and images means enhanced email interaction and an improved bottom line.

"We are pleased to offer CertifiedEmail as a deliverability option to our clients".

"Deliverability is a top concern for our clients," said Bryan Black, managing director of Email Reaction.

"They want to be sure that the emails their customers have opted to receive will reach them.

"As many as 20% of legitimate bulk emails are erroneously flagged as spam and email users faced with constant phishing attacks need a way to identify messages they can trust.

"CertifiedEmail provides improved deliverability and enables email users to clearly identify trusted communications.

"The programme can only grow in effectiveness as it expands in the UK and additional mailbox providers join".

"Emailvision is pleased to be among the first European ESPs to offer Goodmail's CertifiedEmail for our customers in Europe," said Christopher P Combemale, Chief Operating Officer of Emailvision.

"For many clients whose customers are concerned with phishing and spam the marking of known good messages as safe should increase the open and click-through rates.

"Clients choosing to trial CertifiedEmail will certainly benefit from higher delivery rates at Yahoo! and AOL, further impacting response rates in a positive way".

"Giving the customer and their subscribers the best experience has always been a top priority," said Mike Crompton, Business Development manager of MailAgent Limited.

"At MailAgent we are always looking for that extra edge, and there is no doubt from our tests that CertifiedEmail will substantially help increase deliverability and trust for regular communications.

"Trials of the CertifiedEmail system show that even graphic-heavy emails from accredited senders can expect full delivery and image rendering, freeing the design creativity and regaining control of copy".

"We found in Goodmail a comprehensive, alternative and certainly effective way of boosting deliverability for emails sent on behalf of our customers," said Mathieu Hannouz, Product Marketing Manager for Neolane.

"Silverpop has been working with Goodmail for some time, and is pleased to be able to support CertifiedEmail in the UK," said Mike Weston, Silverpop general manager.

"A system that provides for the automatic rendering of links and images can be valuable to marketers - a Silverpop study of email renderability found that fully 40% of the messages reviewed contained missing graphics".

"Deliverability and reputation are important to our customers in Europe," said Chris Byrne, CEO of Spinnakerpro.com.

"The CertifiedEmail service from Goodmail will help deliver on a trusted and robust channel for email marketing communications".

"Goodmail is good news for UK consumers and businesses because it puts the focus on well performing, legitimate and premium email data," said Alexi Lambrou, ISP Relations and Campaign Manager for TMN.

"We work with market-leading brands and so they expect market leading expertise - the expertise gained through our partnership with Goodmail will strengthen our already solid reputation for providing email broadcast services that deliver".

The CertifiedEmail service is the only system of its kind that assures delivery of opt-in email with all links and images automatically rendered intact.

Developed to restore trust between volume senders and individuals, CertifiedEmail imprints messages with cryptographically secure tokens that certify email authenticity and legitimacy.

Available only to senders meeting strict standards for best email practices and low complaint rates, CertifiedEmail messages are presented to users with a unique blue-ribbon icon, providing a measure of security against phishing.

Recent case study data from the largest email marketers and financial senders show click-through rates and email business results (logins, sales) improved by up to 35% when using CertifiedEmail.

CertifiedEmail is supported by leading mailbox providers such as AOL and Yahoo! as well as a wide network of industry leading email platforms, security solutions, and email service providers.
