Maximise opportunities to ride out storm
Many economists are predicting a slowdown for the UK economy in 2008 so sensible businesses are looking at how to maximise opportunities and ride out any potential flat periods.
Historically, preparing for a slowdown has meant reducing costs and overheads and ensuring that your client base is happy and will continue to place orders.
This has not changed: it is essential that as a business you control your costs and keep overheads to a minimum.
However, the first cost to be reduced has normally been the marketing budget, this is commercial suicide.
In times when companies are spending less and clients are not placing the orders they would normally, it is essential that marketing is made more effective than ever to ensure your business continues to move forward.
The important points to make are this, a large percentage of companies do not spend their marketing budget effectively, the return on investment is low and there is little monitoring and measurement of the activity.
As a business, you do not need to increase your marketing budget and it may be possible to reduce it, what you must do is look at some key points regarding your marketing.
Do you have specific objectives as to where the company is going? Have you researched the market and confirmed there is potential to meet you objectives? Have you assessed your existing activity against measurements, does this activity give you the ROI you need? Do you know where to reach your clients? Do you know who your competitors are and what they are offering? Have you identified new products or services that could differentiate you from your competitors? These steps will give you strong information from which to identify what marketing is needed to meet your objectives.
The right marketing does not need to be cost prohibitive; where there are financial and economic restraints the marketing needs to be creative.
You must understand your customers and what they want to know; don't try and tell them what you want them to hear.
