Distribution of news releases on the internet is set for massive growth in 2007 following a major increase in activity concentrated in the second half of last year.

The volume of releases appearing on the Response Source/SourceWire Press Release Wire, a major UK online press release wire service, increased by 46 per cent in 2006 compared to the previous year Volumes grew consistently throughout last year

October and November 2006 were both 32 per cent up on the average for the year, suggesting that growth is likely to continue in 2007.

Daryl Willcox, chairman of the company behind the Response Source/SourceWire Press Release Wire, said: "The popularity of our online press release wire is really taking off thanks to the realisation by many public relations and marketing people that it's a fantastic way of not only communicating with the media, but communicating direct with consumers too.

"And, on top of that, it's also a very effective way of boosting traffic to websites".

Willcox said: "It's not just technology companies that see the benefits of online press release wires; in fact, I would argue that a lot of the growth is coming from general consumer sectors - where the ability to speak direct to your customers and drive them to your website is strategically important".

The SourceWire Press Release Wire, which targets the technology and finance sectors, was launched in 1997.

This was followed by the launch in 2004 of the Response Source Press Release Wire, which covers all other sectors.

Since then both wires have been continually enhanced, including adding search engine optimisation (SEO) benefits and extending reach to the social media.
