Bordeaux is renowned worldwide for its wines, but this celebrated historic beauty of southwest France has even more to offer thanks to a recent revamping of the city.

On June 28, 2007, the Port of the Moon, Bordeaux's port area, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List The city's recent renaissance and UNESCO listing are indicative of its appeal to the travel and tourism industry and its allure to visitors worldwide

The port is being represented at the 2008 Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention in Miami from 10 to 13 March.

The Port of the Moon, located in the heart of Bordeaux, was named for its crescent shape which follows the River Garonne.

The city has succeeded in bringing its architectural, culinary, and cultural heritage to the 21st century, while retaining the metropolitan richness of its urbanisation in the 18th century.

Bordeaux's downtown area has undergone an amazing restoration and today stands proud among the most beautiful places in France, boasting more protected historical buildings than any other French city next to Paris.

A waterfront redevelopment plan has brought a new public tramway for quick travel across the city.

The port itself has also had a facelift with new berthing facilities that run the length of the docks along the river downtown.

Tourism in Bordeaux is also synonymous with the art of living through a variety of cultural and leisure activities.

Throughout the year, major art events come and contribute to the growing influence of the city.

The regional cuisine, available at about 100 locations city-wide, perfectly complements its fine wines with a wide range of flavours for every palate: foie gras, cepes, oysters from the Arcachon Basin, cheese, bread, chocolate and caneles (small pastries with a soft custard centre and a dark, thick caramelized crust).

The city is also rich in luxury boutiques including Cartier, Hermes, Charles Jourdan, Kenzo, Christian Lacroix and Louis Vuitton.

These, and other shopping destinations, are located in the heart of the city in an area dubbed by the citizens as "Le Triangle d'Or" (The Golden Triangle).

Visitors who want to push exploration beyond the doors of the town and the vineyard can discover the area's well-preserved natural richness, thanks to Bordeaux's proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the famous Arcachon Basin.

The coastal areas feature vast sand dunes including the Pilat, the highest dune in Europe, rising 105 meters (about 340 feet) above the water along France's west coast.
