The Zoological Society of London has scooped both the marketing and the PR awards at the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums Awards

The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums Awards celebrate an extraordinary year of achievements and ingenious solutions made by zoos and aquariums across the UK and Ireland As always, the winning projects have been selected against very strict criteria: the assessors include external experts as well as professionals from within the zoo community

BIAZA was very fortunate to have as the External Judge for the Marketing and Public Relations Awards David Thorp from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

The marketing and PR awards celebrate the ingenious ways that zoos communicate their important work.

This year The Zoological Society of London received both the Marketing and PR awards.

The PR award was for the launch of EDGE - a new conservation strategy for the future.

Scientists from ZSL have been developing a new method for assessing which species should be prioritised for conservation attention, and then carrying out important field work on these species.

The launch of EDGE received national and international coverage and is available to the general public on a website.

Gorilla Kingdom, the ambitious new gorilla experience at ZSL London Zoo, received the Marketing Award, this project while increasing visitor numbers and awareness also helped to make people more aware of the threats to gorillas in the wild and what they can do to help.

Other exciting PR featured BBC TV coverage of the birth of a black rhino at Paignton Zoo Environmental Park, the birth of a gorilla at Bristol Zoo Gardens and the rescue of 20 confiscated vultures by the Hawk Conservancy Trust.

At the awards ceremony held at Marwell Zoo in Hampshire, Miranda Stevenson, Director of BIAZA, commented: "The award-winning programmes under the spotlight today demonstrate the huge investment of energy and resources made by our leading zoos to support habitat and species conservation.

"Conservation within zoos and aquariums is a vital part of the work to protect threatened species and to help change public behaviour and ensure the future of planet Earth.

"These awards recognise and celebrate the vital contributions that our members are making to conservation and education each year.

"Equally, they are standard bearers for excellence in animal husbandry and welfare.

"The Marketing and PR Awards celebrate the innovative methods that our members use to communicate their good work".
